Bueno, no fueron 4, fueron (casi) 3 meses sin poner un pie aqui. Las razones son varias, desde las ya consabidas "no tengo tiempo", "no tengo nada interesante que postear" hasta otras como "ash, se me olvidó y mi sesión expiró y que hueva empezar de nuevo"
Por donde comenzar?


Fedora

Para el release de la nueva versión de fedora se trabajó bastante en la parte de traducción, yo colaboré un poquito traduciendo algunos módulos y otro poco traduciendo un par de sitios de la red de Fedora Project al español. Si quieren integrarse a ayudar a fedora no duden en hacerlo de cualquiera de las maneras citadas aqui, no solamente como traductores, sino como desarrolladores, en infraestructura... incluso como embajador o promotor! lo que su tiempo y ganas les permitan. Yo hasta el momento mis actividades no me han permitido moverme mas allá de un traductor (y quien sabe si me lo permitan despues) pero por lo pronto ahi me encuentro.
Fedora 11 ya viene en camino, y ya se abrió la convocatoria para sacar el nombre que tendrá, ya hay algunos bastante interesantes, y ya agregué el mio, posiblemente agregue otro par que traigo en mente hoy. Encuentro verdaderamente interesante la forma de escoger los nombres para Fedora, ahi viene explicado como.


PHP

Actualmente me encuentro trabajando como desarrollador PHP, e incluso estoy haciendo otras cosas por mi cuenta con PHP (y jugando con PHP5.3), pero cada dia me doy cuenta que esto de la programación no es lo mio, y nunca lo fue. Que hacer?
En fin, mientras sigo buscando algo que me levante el ánimo, seguiré trabajando con tecnologías de código abierto... por lo menos no es ASP o Java, verdad?


Trabajo

Aqui es donde esta el meollo del asunto...
Algo cerca de 1 mes atrás, estuve de visita en las oficinas del cliente en USA, las cuales no tienen nada que ver con las instalaciones de aqui donde me encuentro. Aqui las condiciones son insalubres en el mejor de los casos (desde que entré en Febrero, no he parado de estar enfermo de la garganta) y el hecho de solo contar con unos minutos de aire acondicionado al dia lo hacen más incómodo aun. En cambio las instalaciones del cliente son bastante decentes, un ambiente más relajado (no tengo que ir con ropa de vestir, por ejemplo) y en general me sentí mejor. La cuestión es, que muchos lugares aqui en México son asi:


Cuantas más personas podamos tener bajo el mismo techo mientras no generen costos adicionales, es mejor.

Lo cual es una tontería a mi parecer. Encuestas internas las he contestado en el mismo tono, pero parece ser que esto de mantener ya no contento, sino cuasi-confortable esta totalmente fuera del objetivo.
Asi que aqui me tienen, sin saber que es lo que realmente debo hacer. Quiero seguir trabajando aqui? no. Pero aqui en Aguascalientes no hay muchas opciones, y para salirme de aqui pues mejor me iría de regreso a USA a buscar algo de sysadmin, ya que aqui los puestos de ese tipo son una rara avis. No me aviento a hacer freelance porque para eso soy muy malo, realmente la negociación de los dineros no es lo mio, y siento que la economía no está tan sana como para eso ahorita.


Python

Aqui tengo un pequeño programa que hice cuando estaba desempleado para generar mis resumes, es un programa escrito en python y como fuente usa un archivo YAML con el formato. Se encuentra hospedado en Launchpad y actualmente cuenta con las siguientes características:

1. Soporte para i18n (aunque las traducciones aún no han sido hechas)
2. Soporte de filtrado de información por medio de etiquetas (tags)
3. Soporte para historial académico, historial laboral, hobbies, otros proyectos, etc.
4. La salida actualmente es solamente a tipo texto, aunque el formato que "escupe" por default es markdown, como para las personas que gustan poner su CV en línea en una página que soporte ese tipo de marcado

Por que Launchpad? porque me gusta bzr y porque me gusta la infraestructura de LP.net. Asi de sencillo.
Lo que me falta por hacer:

1. Implementar la salida en HTML y PDF (posiblemente ODF si tengo tiempo y ganas)
2. Implementar soporte para una foto (para las personas que gustan de poner su fotito en el CV) y referencias profesionales
3. Algunas otras cosas que de momento no recuerdo

El programa no es la gran cosa, de hecho es muy muy sencillo, y mi intención inicial era tener algo en que ocuparme y recordar un poco de como trabaja YAML. Antiguamente usaba xmlresume pero ahorita se encuentra horriblemente desactualizado y YAML es mucho mas sencillo de escribir que XML. Al final terminé con un programa que me permite tener todo mi historial en un solo archivo y filtrar el enfoque de mi CV de acuerdo a etiquetas. Asi puedo solamente preocuparme de tener 1 solo archivo fuente y puedo aplicar a diversos perfiles sin tener que editar todo el documento


En el plano personal

Subí un montón de fotos nuevas a mi zooomr, entre ellas muchas de mi chava y mis bebas, alguna medio porno de cuando era un niño (por aquello del 30 de Abril) y un set de fotos de cuando nos fuimos a la Feria Nacional de San Marcos el Huanio & Co. (antes de que la cerraran por el desmadre de la AH1N1)

Por otro lado, estamos pensando mi chava y yo acerca de devolver la casa que tenemos al infonavit, ya que no vemos avance en ese aspecto... estoy pagando un montón por esa casa y realmente cada año el avance que le veo es mínimo, creemos que si regresamos esa casa y rentamos en un par de años ya podemos hacernos de algo más permanente, ya que estaríamos pagando de renta mucho menos de lo que pagamos por la casa aqui. Si hay algún contador entre mi público (si es que aún tengo público) le pediría un consejo, je.


Escuela

Y ahi me tienen, en la escuela haciendo servicio social... en realidad lo que hago es poco, ahorita estoy haciendo una mini aplicación con symfony para administrar unas tablas que estaban llevando con excel, y en general es pura mindless labor, pero pues por lo menos me relajo (y allá si tengo a/c en el site )
Ya que termine mi servicio ahora si comenzaré mi trámite para mi título, al fin... espero y sea pronto, porque esto me quita mucho tiempo en las tardes.
Y ya, es todo porque me estoy acalorando un montón, tengo que salir a respirar aire no-enrarecido por lo menos cada hora si quiero sobrevivir.

I've been using the presto plugin for yum for a while now (a year? can't remember) but only now it is being pushed as a "cool new feature". Did I miss something here?
Presto allows you to download only the deltas of updated RPM packages, which makes the updates' size decrease a lot and, by consequence, speeds up the updating process. I guess it reached stable status recently and I wasn't paying close attention
UPDATE: So the changes are not actually on how the plugin works, but actually on how it accomplishes its tasks. Now this is new

Llegaron las elecciones! y estoy bastante emocionado porque va a ser la primera vez que planeo votar a conciencia. No, no me refiero a las elecciones intermedias para la bola de ineptos de la clase política mexicana (a la cual ya me he referido anteriormente como una vil broma -para decirlo leve-). Yo soy un firme creyente de la anarquía como forma de no-gobierno, así que tal vez esta entrada les parezca extraña.
No, me estoy refiriendo a las próximas elecciones para el Fedora Board, el FESCo y el próximo nombre para la versión 12 de Fedora (de la cual se juntaron bastantes afortunadamente, desafortunadamente mis propuestas no gustaron, meh).
Si ustedes tienen una cuenta en Fedora y ya completaron su CLA, pueden votar para elegir al Fedora Board, pero requieren formar parte de un grupo dentro de Fedora (web, infra, l10n, etc) para participar en las otras 2 votaciones.
Las "casillas" se abren a partir de las 00:00 Junio 07 (UTC) y hasta las 23:59 Junio 22 (UTC), pueden votar en el FAS, yo me pondré a revisar a los candidatos para ver bien que conviene (por lo menos para lo que yo pienso de Fedora).
El contraste entre mis posiciones acerca de la política en México y las elecciones en el mundo del software libre es debido a que el SL se asemeja más a una anarquía utópica que a un sistema de gobierno basado en la "democracia": la mayoría de las personas que entran al SL (y persisten) lo hacen por iniciativa propia, por conciencia, por un deseo interno. No lo hacen (la mayoría, no todos) por intereses políticos o económicos, así que las aguas no se ensucian tan fácilmente y no me causan nauseas.
Ya veremos como resulta esto.

Would it be possible to provide a valid OpenID URL to all FAS accounts ala Launchpad? (see https://launchpad.net/~yourusername if you have a launchpad account). Or probably there's one already and I am too blind to catch it? if not, what can I do to help?
OpenID urls are nice if you want to, say, post a comment to LJ or login to applications supporting OpenID so you don't have to create N accounts.

Between all the major hoopla going around in my house for the past month or so, I managed (all by myself) to miss the register deadline for FUDCon Latam, which is a damn shame, since I wanted to attend.
Oh well, maybe I'll attend next year's FUDCon if it happens to be nearby. And by "nearby" I mean within reasonable airplane distance.

07/21/09--08:36: And in other news... (chan 1770874)

This happened while no one was looking. Suffice is to say, these are pretty cool news, I've always considered LP.net to be one of the best platforms for FLOSS hosting, way above sf.net and freshmeat. The tight integration between the VCS (Bazaar in this case) and the rest of the platform functions is one of the key components here. Yeah, you could list me as a fan.
But there was always that thing that bugged me: the way a platform for FLOSS wasn't free itself. That is not the case anymore. I don't have an ubuntu machine around anymore (I replaced my girlfriend's desktop with fedora-es so she could report any missing translations to me directly but man, just by looking at the directions to get the source code, it says it may take some hours just to download the code. That is wicked.
These news were shadowed no doubt by the announcement of Microsoft's release of a chunk of code under the GPL. I took a brief look at it and it only makes sense for them to release this code, it benefits their product, and there was no other way to release kernel code but under the GPL. I don't think this means MS will start unloading tons of code on Linux, but at the same time they have come to the realization that (GPL != Business) is not true anymore. After all, it makes sense to release code under whatever license as long as it means increasing their own business. That's the way most companies operate: they weigh the trade-off, and if it benefits them, so be it.

08/21/09--13:10: From the "dear lazy web" collection (chan 1770874)

I was testing midori, mainly because I wanted a webkit browser to test some pages and midori is a lightweight enough browser to have around.
But (there's always a but, right) I found a problem: midori is not able to open any pages on http://localhost... anyone having the same problem? it works on http://127.0.0.1 without problems though, and other browser do work on localhost, maybe I'm missing something here? anyone smarter than me cares to shed some light?


09/06/09--18:55: I have no words to say... (chan 1770874)

Literally, I have no words to say.
I've been pretty much out of the whole picture these last couple of weeks. But the main reason is that I had my tonsillectomy on the 28th. I was mostly mute for the whole week, and I survived mostly out of the huge reserves my body had stored for such a situation (yeah, I am not overweight, I am prepared ). That also meant that I could hardly focus on anything without feeling tired, and I was feeling kitty-weak for the whole week.
Having no way to swallow food sure puts things in perspective, there are certain things (not people) that I love in this world, and one of them is the food: cook and eat it. One of my dreams is to study/learn new cuisines, originated in no small part from my love of the tastes, textures and smells that different dishes can have. And being unable to even swallow a pop corn was driving me crazy. I didn't eat anything for 4 days after the surgery mostly due to the pain (and thinking on how it would hurt if I ate). Finally on the 5th day I decided I wanted a grape, and what would be my surprise when I couldn't even taste it. That's when I snapped.
I started doing all kind of exercises to recover my sense of taste and to speed up the whole recovery process, and thankfully, I am almost up to par again now. I did them even if they hurt, I thing I was honestly being a sissy, and the loss of taste was the push I needed to finally kick things into action.
I'll be 100% again soon I hope
Oh, one more thing, I'm moving back to the Bay Area on the 19th, so if you have or hear about any apartment in the area (San Francisco or south-ish San Francisco) give me a shout.


09/07/09--09:54: Whatever happened to the hostname? (chan 1770874)

Dear lazy web:
I have two machines working right now, one with fedora, the other with ubuntu live cd. Both machines connect wirelessly to my main router, but only the ubuntu machine displays its hostname in the router client table (in this case "ubuntu"), while the fedora machine is identified by the IP address. This is annoying because I can "ping ubuntu" and it would answer back, but I cannot "ping fedora".
If I connect the machines via ethernet, they both behave the same and I can see the hostname properly set in the router. Both machines answer OK to host lookups as well.
What's the deal? I'm guessing it has something to do with the way fedora handles the ifcfg scripts, but so far I've encountered no way for fedora to set the hostname in the router as ubuntu does.
Ideas?
UPDATE:
It must be my medication still wearing off (or so I hope that's the reason why I missed the whole point here). My main concern, or rather, my question is: What's the difference between ubuntu and fedora's implementation of NetworkManager? I am using it for both machines, what params ubuntu is reading (and from where) that fedora is not?


09/08/09--22:19: Fedora, NetworkManager, hostname, DHCP (chan 1770874)

So after my last post I went on and started testing different configs to pinpoint where exactly the problem was. I didn't want to do that because I'm a lazy guy, but incredibly enough, google gave only vague results concerning my predicament.


The Problem

... or more like "annoyance" in this case. The facts:

• My main router is a wireless
• All the machines in my house connect wirelessly, all of them are linux machines
• I used to have an ubuntu machine, now all of them are fedora
• All of them can connect and use the internet just fine
• Ubuntu machines (I only tried with ubuntu, I cannot assert this happens with other distros) identify themselves with their hostnames in the router list
• Fedora machines (and I suspect any RH-based distro, again, this is just a guess) do not identify with their hostnames, the IP Address is the only record that appears in the router's client list
• All of them are stock, just-installed machines using NetworkManager
• My wireless network does not use any kind of key. This shouldn't have any impact whatsoever, but I wanted to clarify
• If I connect to the router using an ethernet cable, both ubuntu and fedora work properly

The Testing Process

As I said, both distros have the stock install. I accomplished this by using ubuntu (Jaunty) and fedora (Leonidas) live CDs. No additional packages were installed, just the stock NetworkManager stack. After each test I disabled the networking (right-click on NM's applet, uncheck "Enable Networking"), deleted the lease file from /var/lib/dhclient and powered down the router. After making the changes (and waiting something like 5 minutes) I'd power up the router and re-enable NM.


The Root Cause

There were several comments in my last post explaining several theories, and I myself had a hunch where the issue could be present. Most of them pointed me to the dhclient.conf file, but that was half the issue:

• Yes, it has to do with the DHCP request being sent to the DHCP server
• The magic parameter here is "send host-name"
• The tool system-config-network-gui does half the job

I had already tried adding the hostname in the DHCP part in the system-config-network-gui tool (Devices tab -> Your wireless card -> DHCP Settings -> Hostname (optional)) to no avail. I tried this with the eth0 and wlan0 cards, it worked OK for eth0, but not for wlan0.
The problem here is that fedora works with sysconfig parameters, that is, every tool fedora uses for its own management ends up creating/updating config files inside /etc/sysconfig. The conf files for the network cards are in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-YOURNIC, so, if you have eth0 and eth1 you should have ifcfg-eth0 and ifcfg-eth1, ifcfg-wlan0 for your first wireless card. If you check ifcfg-wlan0 after making the changes through system-config-network-gui you'll see a line like


DHCP_HOSTNAME=prettyhostname

Again, check both the eth and wlan ifcfg files and you'll see your changes there, so what's causing only the wireless card to bork? Right now all evidence point to NetworkManager. NetworkManager does a damn fine job at managing your network connections, but it does it differently given the distro where it is running. So it reads the sysconfig files in fedora, and reads the /etc/default/interfaces stuff in debian-based distros. Besides that, it reads the common dhclient config. In ubuntu, we do have a file /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf which has a line


send host-name "";

I think gets replaced somewhere along the way with the hostname taken from hostname or /etc/hosts. Fedora does not have a default /etc/dhclient.conf and, actually, it doesn't work as straightforward as you'd like.
I believe (and please, someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm almost asleep now) NetworkManager creates a dhclient.conf file on the fly by reading the sysconfig values in fedora. After that it reads the common dhclient stuff. However, it is somehow ignoring the DHCP_HOSTNAME value, so it doesn't get translated to the "send host-name" directive in dhclient.conf lingo.


The Workaround

The simplest way would be to add a file /etc/dhclient.conf with the directive and be done with it, however, fedora somehow ignores a "common" dhclient.conf file and instead uses a "per nic" conf file. So you'll have to create a file /etc/dhclient-wlan0.conf (or ra0 or ath0 or whatever your nic is called) with the line


send host-name "prettyhostname";

Don't forget the semi-colon at the end, and of course replace prettyhostname with your actual hostname. Fedora does not work using a placeholder like ubuntu does (yes, I tried, doing so will make it appear as blank in the router's client list). Additionally, you can add any parameter you think should be superseded in this file (dns servers and whatnot)


The Closing Argument

So I spent some time understanding (or more like, trying to understand) NetworkManager's innards, I hope I got it OK. I also went ahead and posted a bug to NM's bugzilla, so hopefully this will get fixed later, the bug is here http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=594591
So that's it, I got to face my little pet peeve with NM, and with that, I'm off to sleep.


10/03/09--13:36: Cambio de... pues de todo (chan 1770874)

Pues he cambiado de empleo (afortunadamente), no voy a decir mucho de la anterior compañía donde estaba trabajando, solamente que mi salida fue por motivos personales (de salud mas que nada), y la verdad es que muchas ganas de regresar no me quedaron. Durante todo el tiempo que estuve ahi no tuve problemas con los pagos, excepto en la parte de viáticos, ahi siempre hubos fallos. Ah, y ahora también, se suponía que me iban a pagar el correspondiente de lo trabajado del mes de Septiembre el dia último, pero al parecer una vez que sales de ahi ya no eres tan importante. Si, me molesta porque se supone que hice varios trámites y entregué muchos documentos para que a mi salida no hubiera problemas, pero.... bueno.
Conseguí otro trabajo, de nuevo en USA en el área de la bahía de San Francisco, de hecho el trabajo es en San Francisco, estaré trabajando para digg.com, lo cual es bueno porque:

1. Los problemas y la tecnología son interesantes
2. La paga es buena
3. Ya no soy un contractor, sino empleado directo de tiempo completo
4. Es una compañía pequeña, asi que puedo moverme con mayor facilidad sin tanta burocracia

Hasta ahora llevo 2 semanas ahi, adaptándome al ambiente y conociendo a mis compañeros de trabajo. También estoy poniéndome al corriente con la infraestructura, toda basada en Debian, lo cual es bueno, no me desagrada debian como servidor, al contrario. Aunque mi estación de trabajo estoy tratando de dejarla con Fedora como es mi costumbre.
Y digo "tratando de dejarla" porque la máquina que me dieron es una macbook pro, de las cuales no soy tan fan (de su sistema operativo mas que nada, el hardware es muy decente), y pues tiene sus detalles, me he ayudado mucho de varios sitios en la red, pero principalmente estos tres, la máquina es una macbook pro 5,4 y las instrucciones en su mayoría son correctas.
Primero le puse ubuntu, y siguiendo la liga de ubuntu que puse arriba todo funciona como debiera, excepto que ubuntu se me congeló (como ya antes lo ha hecho en otras de mis máquinas) decidí quitarlo. Quería dejar una distribución .deb para tener un ambiente aproximado a lo que voy a trabajar, pero ubuntu me desanimó en este caso.
Luego le puse fedora 11 (Leónidas) y solo tuve algunos problemas:

• El driver de nvidia, este fue error de mi parte, en estas máquinas se instala por default el kernel PAE, asi que también hay que instalar el driver de kmod-nvidia-PAE. Luego de eso blacklistear el módulo nouveau (el cual cabe aclarar que funciona out of the box pero sin aceleración 3d) para que no choque con el de nvidia
• El sonido, pero siguiendo el consejo de la página de ubuntu en la sección Sound lo pude arreglar
• La backlight, esa lo arreglé con pommed pero dejenme decirles que la instalación es una patada en el cuello

Aparte de esas molestias, y del hecho de que no puedes reiniciar, no importa la distribución (tienes que apagar la máquina y luego encenderla, de otra forma se "cuelga") fedora trabajó sin problemas por horas en esa máquina. Me faltaría probar con debian, presiento que va a ser más estable que ubuntu, pero aun no me decido si le sigo o ya la dejo con fedora por la paz.
En fin. Pasando al plano personal, corrí con mala suerte a mi llegada a San Francisco, ya que perdí mi cartera cuando llegué del aeropuerto. Debió caerse cuando me bajé del taxi porque me saqué la cartera para pagarle al chofer, pero ya después no la encontré. Eso me metió en muchos problemas porque no podia disponer de dinero por ATM, y no podia hacerlo en ventanilla porque no tenia una identificación... afortunadamente ahorita ya casi esta todo solucionado, aun faltan algunos detalles pero en su mayoría todo esta ya casi en orden.
También me puse a buscar un departamento, tenía de 2 sopas: buscar en San Francisco y pagar un poquito más de renta, o buscar fuera de San Francisco y pagar un poquito menos, pero aumentar mi tiempo de viaje cada dia. Luego de un par de semanas viviendo en San Francisco me convencí que lo mio no era vivir en una ciudad, así que próximamente (hoy y mañana) me estaré mudando a Burlingame, que está convenientemente localizada a escasos 30 minutos de donde está mi trabajo, casi lo mismo que hago en el camión
Burlingame es un pueblo muy chido, con todo lo que necesitas y muy tranquilo, asi como para mi que no me gusta el desmadre ni nada de eso, jeje.
En fin, ya me cansé de escribir, espero ya actualizar este chunche un poco más seguido.

We work mostly with debian but, really, you won't notice the difference even if you come from another linux-flavored background. You MUST know linux/unix, a lot of it, that's for sure.
